Fireproofing Equipment

What Is Passive Fire Protection (PFP) Equipment?

Fireproofing equipment is used to apply passive fire protection (PFP) coatings to structural steel, pipe racking, beams, columns, storage tanks and other specified substrates. Unlike active fire protection systems such as fire sprinklers and alarms, passive fire protection is built into the structure or applied to its components. Fireproofing materials help insulate protected substrates from high temperatures and delay the loss of structural strength during a fire. The achieved fire-resistance period depends on the tested system, specified material thickness, substrate geometry, installation conditions, and applicable design requirements.

The equipment on this page is divided into two primary application categories:

  • Intumescent fireproofing coatings expand when exposed to fire and form an insulating char layer that slows heat transfer to the protected substrate. This category includes high-build epoxy PFP materials as well as other intumescent coating systems. They are commonly specified for structural steel, pipe racks, storage tanks, and other industrial or commercial applications. Required thickness, finish, and application equipment vary by coating and fire-resistance design.
  • Spray-applied fire-resistive materials (SFRMs) include cementitious and gypsum-based materials applied to structural assemblies such as columns, beams, joists, decks, walls, floors, and roof assemblies. These materials require pumps designed to move abrasive, aggregate-containing products at the flow rate and pressure specified by the material manufacturer.

Choosing the Right Fireproofing Spray Equipment

tart with the specified fireproofing material and its application requirements. Intumescent coatings and cementitious or gypsum-based SFRMs require different equipment configurations.

For intumescent coatings, Bolair offers Graco airless sprayers and dedicated PFP systems, including TexSpray Mark, DutyMax, GH Big Rig, Xtreme PFP and XM PFP. Depending on the coating, application may involve a single-component material, a two-component material mixed before pumping, or a plural-component system that meters and mixes the components during application. The selected equipment must meet the coating manufacturer’s requirements for material preparation, mix ratio, temperature, output, pressure and hose configuration.

For cementitious and gypsum-based SFRMs, Bolair offers Graco ToughTek piston and rotor-stator pumps. Select the model according to the material’s composition, density, mixing requirements, required output and delivery distance. Compatibility must be confirmed for the specific material and pump configuration.

Whether your project involves intumescent coatings or SFRMs, Bolair can help match the equipment to your material specification, production targets and site conditions.

Follow the material manufacturer’s instructions and equipment manual for cleaning, flushing and shutdown. Procedures and cleaning materials differ between coating and SFRM systems.

Intumescent coatings expand when exposed to fire and form an insulating char layer that slows heat transfer to the protected substrate. This category includes epoxy-based and other intumescent coating systems used on structural steel, pipe racks, storage tanks, and similar applications. Spray-applied fire-resistive materials, or SFRMs, include cementitious and gypsum-based materials applied to structural assemblies such as beams, columns, joists, decks, walls, floors, and roof assemblies. The specified fire-resistance design and material manufacturer’s instructions determine the required material, thickness, and application method.
Some heavy-duty airless paint sprayers can apply compatible intumescent coatings, provided they meet the coating manufacturer’s requirements. This does not mean that every paint sprayer can handle every fireproofing material. Cementitious and gypsum-based SFRMs require suitable material pumps and application equipment rather than conventional paint-spraying equipment.
The coating manufacturer’s instructions determine the application method. Single-component coatings use suitable airless equipment. Some two-component epoxy coatings permit hot-pot application, where the components are mixed before being fed into a compatible single-component sprayer and used within the specified working time. Other coatings require a plural-component system, such as a suitably configured Graco XM PFP, to meter and mix the components during application.
There is no single pressure requirement for all fireproofing materials. Required operating pressure depends on the material, application temperature, hose size and length, spray tip or nozzle, desired output, and equipment configuration. Maximum working pressure is an equipment limit and should not be treated as the recommended spray setting. Follow the material manufacturer’s application data and the equipment manual.
